A museum at the heart of the Belfry
With 365 steps, a height of 87 metres and 49 bells, the belfry has experienced and left its mark on history; its reopening will enable visitors not only to travel through time to the origins of its original construction and to understand its role in the different periods it has traversed, but also to make a vertical journey and discover the region from up high.
The museum experience is arranged thematically: history of the belfry, UNESCO heritage site listing, bells, restoration, etc.
Different types of visits and activities will be offered to the public, some aimed at specific sectors of the public. At the heart of the various exhibition spaces is a museum setting that combines traditional and modern approaches. Besides the architecture, the panoramic views, the objects borrowed from local Mons residents' personal collections relating to the belfry and the museum panels, visitors' journeys through the belfry are enhanced by multimedia and new technologies.
Visitors can also take a glass elevator up to the final stop – the panoramic level. The descent via elevator includes pre-programmed pauses at each level, so that visitors can take in the main points of interest on each level of the belfry.
Situated in the heart of Mons, it will make an excellent starting point for exploring the city's various cultural and tourist attractions.
